This district includes the islands of Terceira, Graciosa and São Jorge, the Central Group of the Azores archipelago.

Terceira (the third to be discovered by Portuguese sailors in the 15th century) owes great part of its development to the establishment of an American airbase in Lajes, operating since World War II.

The capital, Angra do Heroísmo, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983, and is the most cosmopolitan city of the archipelago.

The island is quite large and filled with small, forested hills and farmland divided into fields that look like patchwork.

Its volcanic origins can be seen, for example, at Caldeira de Guilherme Moniz, an eroded crater which is the largest in Azores, and at Furnas do Enxofre (sulphur), hot steaming geysers where the vapours are transformed into colourful cloud formations.

The small island of Graciosa is one of the most peaceful places in the Azores: it is mostly occupied by farms and vineyards where ox-drawn carts and old ploughs are still in use.

Its main attraction is Furna do Enxofre, where the visitor goes down into the bowels of a volcanic crater, with a huge cave and sulphurous lake at the bottom.

Finally, São Jorge is a long, mountainous island that is only eight kilometers wide. Visitors especially enjoy the views from the dramatic cliffs along its north coast, which drop 480 metres into the sea.
