Considered the most cosmopolitan city of the Azores, Angra do Heroísmo was declared a World Heritage site by the UNESCO in 1983.

For centuries Angra has been a stopping point on the routes between Europe, America and Africa, and this rich past is visible, despite the damages caused by the big earthquake in 1980, in its great churches and monasteries, the impressive fortress of Saint John the Baptist, the twin-towered Cathedral (16th century) or in stately Renaissance houses with graceful balconies.

The best views over the city of Angra do Heroísmo and its beautiful harbour are obtained from the top of Monte Brasil, a vulcanic crater of lush vegetation rising on the western side of the bay.

Another excellent view over the opposite part of the city may be seen from Alto da Memória, from where a path leads to the beautiful and tranquil public gardens.

Nearby, the former 15th-century Convent of Saint Francis now lodges the Angra do Heroísmo Museum, with collections of maps, armour, paintings, sculptures, fine porcelain and furniture.

Leaving the city, the road to the hills of Serra de Santa Bárbara is bordered with blue hydrangeas and leads to a solitary crater at 1022 metres.

The county's inland is characterized by green pastures dotted with small lagoons, in contrast with the coast exhibiting areas of black lava.

Like all the island of Terceira, Angra is known for the religious festivals of the Holy Spirit, which take place for weeks after Easter and include popular rituals and traditions, lavish floral decorations and much merrymaking.
