One of the most industrialized counties of the north of Portugal(namely in textiles), Famalicão has nevertheless an interesting natural, historical and cultural patrimony, besides the gastronomy which is greatly appreciated.
Monasteries such as those of Landim and Arnoso are fine examples of Medieval architecture, but there are also rich manorial houses (such as those of Vinhal and Pindela), Roman bridges (Lagoncinha, São Veríssimo) and several churches and chapels worth visiting.
The belvederes of Monte do Facho and Santa Catarina, among others, offer fine views of this county situated in the green heart of Minho.
It was also here, at São Miguel de Ceide, that lived and died one of Portugal's greatest romantic writers, Camilo Castelo Branco. His tragic and romanesque life is recalled at the
Casa-Museu de Camilo, the house where the author lived and committed suicide in 1890 and which has been turned into a museum.
After this cultural tour, visitors will probably be tempted by the reputation of Famalicão's restaurants, and they will hardly be disappointed as the local cuisine represents the best Minho has to offer.
Papas de sarrabulho (although made with the strange ingredients of pig's blood and suet the dish is indeed savoury),
rojões (fried pork spiced with cumin, wine and garlic),
cozido à portuguesa (a variety of meats, sausages and vegetables served in their own broth), and naturally the much appreciated dried codfish are included among the specialities, which even taste better with the region's sparkling
vinho verde.
