An important industrial town and port, although it has known better days, Setúbal can be the starting point to explore an area rich in views, attractions and interesting points.
The town itself offers excellent restaurants with seafood and fresh fish and peaceful walks through gardens with fountains or the old town, with its narrow streets and squares full of shops and cafés, or even the animated covered market.
From there, tourists can take a ferryboat to the Tróia Peninsula, with high apartotels and bars, but also pure and sandy beaches, surrounded by dunes and pine woods.
Setúbal is bathed by the river Sado: its estuary has been declared a natural reserve where many birds are found near areas of water and mud flats and dried out lagoons, and also a species of dolphins known locally as
roazes.
From there, visitors can also drive to the
Serra da Arrábida mountains, a wild and beautiful natural park with an astonishing beach of clear waters at its feet: Portinho da Arrábida.
