Nearly always a quiet little town, Golegã changes radically each year in the first weeks of November, due to its animated horse fair, Feira Nacional do Cavalo. Thousands of horse lovers and many breeders gather here to appreciate Portugal's finest specimens. The fair also coincides with Saint Martin's Day (11th November) when the year's new wine is traditionally tasted, being the specialities água-pé and roasted chestnuts. All year round, tourists can visit the 16th-century Mother Church, with a beautiful Manueline portal and panels of glazed tiles from the 17th century, or the modern art collection in the Museu de Pintura e Escultura Martins Correia, or yet Quinta da Cardiga, a huge farm near the river Tagus that once belonged to the Templars and to the Order of Christ and that still preserves a Manueline portal and decorated tiles from the 16th and 17th centuries. Near Golegã, between the rivers Tagus and Almonda, the Natural Reserve of Paúl de Boquilobo (529 hectares) is a wetland with groves of willow and ash-trees and its inner zones, flooded during almost all year, are covered by a variety of aquatic plants and cane thickets. The biggest colony of herons of the Iberian Peninsula lives here, and during Spring it becomes an important nesting site for enormous groups of wildfowl, mainly herons and egrets.
