Sintra offers almost everything: from palaces and mansions to densely wooded slopes and romantic or exotic parks and gardens; from churches and monuments to excellent restaurants.
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, it attracts thousands of visitors all year round, but there are always quiet spots among the wooded hills or the lush vegetation of its gardens.
It is imperative to admire the Moorish Castle, the Pena Palace, the National Palace of Sintra or the Town Hall, to walk through the cobbled streets of the historical center or, for a more confortable tour, to take one of the horse and carriage rides around the town.
But don't be satisfied with this, as the county has much more to offer: the wild and romantic gardens which surround the Palace of Monserrate, the stunning views over the Atlantic coast seen from the peaks of the
Serra de Sintra mountains, the Palace of Seteais (now a luxury
hotel and restaurant), the lovely village of Colares (where a famous wine is produced), the beach resorts of Praia das Maçãs or Praia Grande, or yet
Cabo da Roca, where a lighthouse marks the most western point of Europe.
After admiring all these sights, you can always drive to the Várzea and eat a delicious recipe of cod or roasted kid, together with the local sweet speciality, the
queijadas (cheese tarts spiced with cinnamon) of Sintra.
