Located on a mountainous zone of transition between the Beira plateau and the High Douro region, the county of Meda offers a diversified landscape which combines highlands of granite boulders and spontaneous undergrowth, fields of almond-trees which dazzle visitors in Spring when they start to blossom, dense pinewoods and several rivers and streams where fans of fishing may find eels and barbel.
The historical and architectural patrimony is equally rich and displays a large number of monuments, churches, manor-houses and sculpted stone pillories.
Among many sites of interest, it is worth admiring the magnificent castles of Longroiva, which still preserves an impressive keep and part of the enclosure, and of Marialva, with four towers dominating a medieval village surrounded by fortified walls.
The ruins of the Castle of Ranhados, the Town Hall, the
Casas Novas manor, sculpted fountains and the spacious Mother Church of Meda, as well as several stone pillories across the county (namely those of Ranhados, Aveloso and Longroivo), also deserve to be visited.
On the other hand, Meda is proud of its traditional handicrafts, which offer a variety of products, from images of saints, linen bedspreads and wool rugs to works in pottery, basketry, carpentry and masonry.
At table, rural flavours are still preserved by typical dishes such as purslane soup, onion broth, asparagus omelette, cod with milk or wood-pigeon rice, together with delicious regional desserts.
