A mountainous region of granite rocks softened by green wooded slopes, it lies far away from the hub of tourism but is worth exploring for its rural scenery and typical villages.

The seat of the county, Moimenta da Beira, is a pleasant little town with an interesting church from a former Benedictine convent (15th century) and the Solar dos Guedes (18th century manor-house with two floors and Rococo painted ceilings), which presently hosts the Municipal Library.

At the village of Rua, there is a fine stone pillory from the 17th century.

Across the county, visitors will find prehistoric traces, pleasant fluvial beaches to relax and fishing facilities, namely at the Vilar Dam (trouts).

Handicrafts reflect the rural characteristics of the county, such as the traditional straw baskets of Alvite and the hand-made tin-works of Leomil.

The gastronomy is based on a robust diet, with typical dishes of roast kid and lamb, cured meats and sausages, cozido à portuguesa (a variety of meats, sausages and vegetables) and feijoada (stew of kidney or butter beans and cured meats).
